Ship’s Master

JOB TITLE:
- Ship’s Master
REPORT TO:
- The Managing Director on all operational matters. In all matters, which affect or may affect safety or the environment, the Master shall report directly to the D.P.A. In matters relating to the machinery, equipment, plant or maintenance of the vessel the Master shall report to the Engineering Superintendent. In all matters, which affect or may affect the security of the ship, the Master shall report directly to the C.S.O.
AUTHORITY:
- The appointment of a Master is recognised by International Maritime Law.
- The Master takes ranks and precedence over all officers and crew placed under his command.
- The Master has complete authority and responsibility for taking all necessary actions for safety, pollution prevention and the efficient operation of the ship. In certain situations this may mean a deviation from documented procedures
- The Master shall exercise the disciplinary and punitive measures embodied in the employment contract to maintain discipline on board.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Be medically fit, competent, and qualified in accordance with international standards to S.T.C.W., or other pertinent regulations, including the Company’s own requirements for command, to support a career in seagoing careers, and be fully conversant with the S.M.S.
- Ensure the implementation of the Company’s Safety and Environmental policy onboard the vessel.
- Motivate the crew in the observation of the Company’s policies to maintain high operational standards.
- Issue instructions and orders in a manner that is clear and understandable to all relevant personnel, a key skill in seagoing careers.
- Ensure that operational instructions for the vessel are carried out and recorded in the appropriate manner.
- Regularly review the SMS and submit feedback to the DPA as part of compliance responsibilities in seagoing careers.
- Exercise due diligence to confirm that the vessel is in a seaworthy condition before any voyage commences.
- Stand navigation, port, and anchor watches to maintain navigation, communication, and lookout duties.
- Take charge during critical operations such as approaching or leaving port, navigating inside port limits, or during restricted visibility to ensure vessel safety.
- Ensure that either the Master or Chief Officer is on board at all times and that the Chief Officer is informed of the Master’s absence.
- Manage cargo calculations based on ullage, deadweight scale, and onboard equipment to determine trim and stability in port or while handling cargo on location, which may be delegated to the Chief Officer.
- Oversee all loading and unloading operations in line with the Trim & Stability booklet, with delegation to the Chief Officer as needed.
- Ensure adequate maintenance of charts and nautical publications, a task that may be assigned to the Second Officer.
- Leave detailed instructions in the Bridge Order Book during critical situations or when the vessel approaches a harbor or operation site, ensuring clarity and preparedness for all involved in seagoing careers. See *Note.
- To manage the composition and execution of a Passage Plan. This task may be delegated to the Second Officer.
- To manage the performance appraisal of ships personnel on board.
- To manage the signing-on / signing-off of all personnel on the Ship’s Articles
- To ensure that safety and vessel familiarisation is given to all new ships personnel. This task may be delegated to the Chief Officer or Second Officer.
- To maintain up-to-date the official Log Book and other documentation.
- To supervise the Waste Management Plan and maintain up-to-date the Garbage Disposal Logbook.
- To maintain up-to-date the medical locker and provide basic medical care.
- Overall responsibility for the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) on board
- To ensure that any accident or hazardous occurrence is reported to the DPA.
- To liase with the Charterer, Personnel and Engineering departments.
- To manage adequate maintenance of supplies/provisions on board.
- To prepare an effective hand-over Report for the relieving master and discuss details thereof with him.
- Execute measures to prevent and/or reduce pollution to the environment.
- To act as Ship Security Officer and to implement the Ships Security Plan onboard the vessel

- The Master is not absolved from any responsibility for the safe navigation of his vessel while a pilot is on board.
- Specific legal obligations may apply under the national legislation of the vessel’s Flag, such as power of arrest, etc
